A Call to Action for Resilience in the Philippines

The Philippines' geographic position and condition of archipelago make it a hotspot for natural disasters. Situated near the Pacific Ring of Fire and west of the Pacific Ocean, the nation of Southeast Asia is prone to various natural disasters, many of which are made worse by climate change. Among many other things, these risks include volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, storm surges, floods, and droughts.

Innovating toward resilience
Coming up with ideas for resilience
The way we plan, construct, and run our communities and structures can be made more resilient by putting in place the right safeguards and mitigating measures. With this strategy, the effects of natural disasters on the economy can be mitigated while also protecting human life.

The International Finance Corporation acknowledges that disaster effects can be significantly reduced even though we are unable to completely eliminate all hazards associated with developed assets. The Building Resilient Index was created in order to achieve this.

The Building Resilience Index is an online platform for hazard mapping and resilience assessment that assesses the risks of natural disasters specific to a certain area for a real estate project or portfolio, as well as the resilience measures put in place to lessen such risks. By proactively integrating hazard assessment, catastrophe risk reduction, and resilience disclosure into the way we design our buildings, it seeks to transform the built environment.
